Your experience may not be universal. When young, I enlisted in the USAF to stay out of the infanrtry, got a top-secret clearance, attached to NSA as cryptanalyst, during which service I discovered that Border-Buard traffic was not one-time pad but isomorphic key (when more experienced cryptanalysts had missed this for some years), went to grad school, did my dissertation -- and all this time voted the straight DP ticket. All this by age of 35. By age of 38 had become what you call a Maoist, shifted around considerably in various ways from that point on, but still, a few months from 80, believe in Luxemburg's "socialism or barabism" covers all possible futues for humanty.
