Your experience may not be universal. When young, I enlisted in the USAF to stay out of the infanrtry, got a top-secret clearance, attached to NSA as cryptanalyst, during which service I discovered that Border-Buard traffic was not one-time pad but isomorphic key (when more experienced cryptanalysts had missed this for some years), went to grad school, did my dissertation -- and all this time voted the straight DP ticket.
