I never wrote that paradise was possible in Chile; I was just arguing 
that their struggle and its outcome mattered. It mattered to the people 
involved and yes, it mattered in the context of "world history."

And to support my thesis I suggested that it mattered enough that the 
U.S. could not stand even the tiniest example of a socialist outcome 
anywhere in the world.
