I have no position of my own here and have not read the original
article.

But any discussion of university/college finances should take into
account the enormous cost of athletic programs. Even in the case of the
very few universities where the athletic program is "self-supporting"
there is confusion: that self-support inlcudes the mandatory student
athletic fee.
