O.K. That is one of the most wonderful movies I ever saw. It had not an iota of impact on my political beliefs after I saw it back in 1958 or so. If It had any impact at all it would have been towards political quietism: it portrayed the utter useless ness of all collective organizations nominally intended to aid the individual.
We are talking about radical politics here, not merely films that radicals find pleasant to watch.
Birth of a Nation, viewed from the proper focus, drmatizes as no other movie the inseparability of U.s. civilization and racism. The political impace depends wholly on the beliefs the viewer brings to the movie. If one brings anti-racist views to the movie, it might teach you that only radical responses wre adequate to a nation united around white supremcay.
