[lbo-talk] why liberal Dems are absolutely useless or worse

There's nothing wrong with holding out for a deal and ultimately relenting
when it is not forthcoming. A better resolution might have been possible.
I like to think so, but it would require much more of the sort of outside
pressure exerted by Jane Hamsher, Glenn Greenwald, and David Sirota, in
concert with pwogs in Congress. It might be a delusion on my part, but it
seemed like Michael Moore was not very visible in the course of this debate.
Perhaps the biggest obstacle in all this was the myth of Obama the liberal,
admittedly held by myself among others. A possible historical analog for
Obama and the liberals is the way Mitterrand wrecked the SP in France.
The fact remains that this bill will provide some protection against
financial ruin for people who would not otherwise have coverage. It will
also increase useful medical care that would not otherwise have been
resorted to. The new system will invite changes (good or bad, depending on
mobilization and public opinion), whereas the failure of the bill will bury
the issue indefinitely.
Looking forward to seeing the gang Saturday.
