You could do a whole routine, just on that question.
As a long time practitioner of the above trade (art that nobody understands), I can no longer say. Evidently it wasn't art. I thought, well, if I have to explain this shit, how the hell is that art?
It got even worse after most people didn't even understand the explanations.
So I gave up that line and started designing what I thought were really cool color combinations. Nobody like the colors either. Ultimately color is a fashion designer trip and changes all the time, but apparently never in my direction. So I basically painted, welded, and designed my way completely out of the arts altogether.
I tried to write a story about about some of that history, told something like Beckette tells stories---which can be read either as a tragedy or comic farce. Only one writer out of about five or six readers, I showed the story understood it.
So, thank god I never tried comedy.
