Chris Doss :

Morality and empathy are older than just a few thousand years...

^^^^^ CB: Yeah, morality's origin is approximately coincident with the origin of the human genome.

And universal morality/altruism would the best method of adaptation to whatever changes there have been in the effective/relevant human environment of the last several thousand years just like it was the best strategy of species adaptation to the environments of the previous hundreds of thousands of years.

Socialism or babarism !

^^^^^^^^

----- Original Message ---- From: Andy <andy274 at gmail.com> kind of contradict the whole of evolutionary psychology, since morality and empathy presumably evolved as a way of perpetuating the selfish gene?

Not if the environment changes faster than the genome does, which sounds like what's happened the past several thousand years.
