They're not just quick to demonize the next batch of immigrants, but also to embrace all the hallowed nationalist myths and free-enterprise ideology. Look at all the waving American flags in yesterday's demos. The whole cycle of Irish and S.E. European ethnics is in the early stages of repeating itself. No one is more desperate to conform to the social mainstream than a second-generation immigrant just out of the ethnic ghetto.
The new round of nativist repression has to be beaten, but some on the left seem to hope the effort might give the left a shot in the arm. It might, but only in the way a Ponzi scheme can make you rich.
