So, the results are in and the Lib Dems actually lost 5 seats in the House of Commons. The poll surge for the party, the Cleggmania in the media, the talk of a three-horse race, or even a two-horse race between Cameron and Clegg, amounted to nothing. 

What we've seen is further confirmation of how third parties, even major ones like the Liberal Democrats, are snuffed out on election day in first-past-the-post voting systems.
