It may be helpful to consider why one of the preeminent evolutionary theorists of the 20th century (Gould) is a "strong opponent" of evolutionary psychology. The claim that all human psychological characteristics (e.g., a "sense of fairness") are the result of natural selection is in fact inconsistent with evolutionary theory and research. Even Darwin argued that species have many characteristics that were not the result of evolutionary processes!
The claim "if X exists in a species, X must be the result of natural selection" is a pernicious and simplistic misrepresentation of modern evolutionary theory. The more we ridicule the claim, the better.
