I will be organizing an 8-week study group on Marx's Grundrisse (1857) in New York City this summer, using the 1973 Penguin translation. We will meet once a week on Thursdays, beginning July 8, through August 26. People interested in participating should be committed to reading 100 pages a week of sometimes dense material, and to regular attendance. If you have doubts about conflicting time commitments, or expect to be away for several of those weeks, it would be better to wait for another occasion. There are no "prerequisites", but a familiarity with Marx's earlier work, or with Capital, would of course be very helpful. To have maximum participation and the most possible discussion, group members will take sections (20-25 pages) of the weekly reading and do presentations for the group. (This has worked quite well in the study group which has covered the 3 vols. of Capital since last fall.) We will meet initially in a conference room near Union Square, but will have to find an adequate alternative space by late July. We will aim for a maximum of 15 participants. If you are interested, write to me off-list:
PLEASE NOTE: when writing, describe your background in Marx and your previous and/or present political involvements and outlook.
