Oh yeah! As with anything else, experience matters. But younger teachers are cheaper and more helpless. Getting rid of older teachers also saves on pensions, so.....

Well, this is fairly pernicious: http://www.keepgreatteachers.org/index.cfm. If I'm not mistaken, there is little to no evidence that teacher layoffs based on seniority would actually harm the educational achievement of students, no? Wouldn't younger teachers, on average, actually be worse teachers than veterans because of lack of experience?
