If they attacked US-flagged ships, to me, it's another indicator they got a US OK (although reports so far are saying Israel only attacked the lead ship).
I believe the lead ship was Turkish-flagged; beyond that, probably more importantly, the Turkish government has staked a lot, diplomatically, on this mission.
