Right-wing republicans (both "social" and "cultural' conservatives) have often used the myth that Oxford is a Marxist university for propaganda purposes (bizarre for me, since i was schooled in the UK and as a VIth-form-leaving student was told by friends at Cambridge not to attend the conservative Oxford rival campus. In fact, when i think of Oxford it calls to mind vicious Islamophobic conservatives like Roger Scruton).

Anyone remember the right-wing media-backed campaign to discredit Clinton for being a Rhodes scholar at Oxford? I quote Limbaugh: "do you know who teaches Rhodes scholars? Marxists." [source: 'This haircut business is the most': Multimedia Entertainment, Inc., 5/27/93]

While working on Dan La Botz's senate campaign here in Ohio recently (more on this, if i can squeeze a plug in, at:http://www.socialistwebzine.org/2010/11/ ohio-campaign-great-success.html), i was told to go back to "Marxist Sweden" or "Communist France" a couple of times. (Aside from the obvious confusions, and on a strictly geographically level, do they think England is a part of these countries?). Cest la vie...
