I don't know much about the Portuguese "Socialist Party", but I do note that they sit in the European Parliament as part of the "Party of European Socialists", which for the most part is a social democratic grouping. Most of these parties haven't really been socialist for decades, if ever.

Incidentally, the Irish austerity measures are being announced as I speak. It's pretty grim.
