If, with Luxemburg, one rjects completely the Mythology of Progress (of a
journey of a thousand miles starting with a single step), then there is no
real difference between the bamboozlement of Americans and the bamboozlement
of the residents of any other  core capitalist nation. Real or alleged
differences are politically insignificant.
It is therefore a serious mistake for U.S. anti-capitalists to pay any
attention at all to the weaknesses or stupidities of Americans. The only
relevant data conerns that proportion (whether one-halkf of one per ent or 5
percent who might be reached by a mass movement on a given issue at a given
time. Whinings, wailings, sneers, etc at the stupidity or reactionary
opinions of Americans is mere self-indulgence in the superiority of one's
own perceptions.
