My dear, I never said Lydon pretended to be a leftist -- although I have heard him bleat Old Labourish sentimentalities from time to time, as part of his blokish act. But it's my fault for steering you down the wrong path: "hypocrisy" was very poor word choice on my part. What I meant to say (among other things) is that Lydon is a master at navigating the space between authenticity and posing. Sometimes he's a brazen con, sometimes weepily sincere, usually a hard-to-define admixture. He maintains ironic distance but not so much that he can be clearly indicted for phoniness. I couldn't diagram it if I wanted to. I also don't know what I'm talking about, and have to catch a cab.
