In a strange way, this gives me some hope in these infuriating political 
times: the anti-tax, anti-government spending crowd is a much smaller 
proportion of the total population than it was 70 years ago.  At least 
today a majority of the U. S. population think the govt should "do 
something" about economic downturns.
