Simon's talk at USC covered the following -

That "The Wire" was a political tract disguised as a cop show.

That he was inspired by the Greek tragedians and by Kubrick's "Paths of Glory."

Then he talked at length about the effect of internet/neoliberalism on journalism, and he talked about "impact" journalism.

All in all, I learned a lot.

This is not an example of art being smarter than the artist. He is plenty smart, and plenty seasoned, and his instincts about using the arts to articulate his vision are excellent.
