Carrol, have you ever read Rousseau? This quote is a profound mistake, mistaking the Jacobins' simplified and distorted interpretation of Rousseau for Rousseau, who was deeply subtle. It is a little like mistaking Stalin's ideas for those of Marx. In fact the two mistakes were routinely yoked together by the two most influential people who launched this picture of Rousseau, Camus and Arendt.
