Alan Rudy :

not saying this is BS - though it is the freep and their interpretations are often of dubious quality - what percentage of this, I wonder, is a statistical artifact of black outmigration relative to white in-migration

^^^^^^^ CB: Probably. The article says both in-migration of Whites to Detroit proper and out-migration of Blacks to suburbs. The main residential segregation in "Detroit" is between the City of Detroit proper and its suburbs of Detroit Metropolitan Area. So, both of these would tend to deseg Detroit Metropolitan Area.

^^^^^

the falling overall population of Detroit surely is a factor even if white 20-somethings and >50 yr olds are moving in...

^^^^ CB: Correct. Though ultimately if enough Whites start moving in it would lessen the population drop.

^^^^^^^

it'd, of course, also be interesting to know if that white in-migration clusters around Woodward or over by Grosse Pt, no?

^^^^ CB: That seems likely. Also, in Lafayette Park ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lafayette_Park,_Detroit), and downtown all over. Somebody white might not be likely to move in to Mack and Bewick or 7 Mile and Southfield, or around State Fair on the Eastside (smile).

^^^^^^^

last, that "cool cities" reference couldn't be lamer... Granholm's been pushing that for 7 years and never once noted that the one correlate across all cool cities is an active, visible and accepted gay community (wonder why?)

^^^^^ CB: Detroit just elected an openly gay City Council President. President of City Council is the one with most votes.

Of course, Detroit is just Way Cool in general, too.
