I wasn't aware that using economic - albeit Marxist - jargon on an economics listserve was pretentious or any way out of line. In any case, I'd be happy to elaborate further, when I'm not pecking on my iPhone, that is.

I don't object to jargon as such; I object to mindless use of it. If you use a technical term you should be prepared to defend its correctness. I myself make considerable use of that particular bit of jargon: it names something important. But applying it to individuals or individual behavior is nonsense.

It is also usually misapplied, primarily because so many people use it as an empty moral epithet.
