Achin Vanaik has written a number of pieces in New Left Review over the years. For a more rigorously Marxist treatment, you might want to look at a recent study in Economic and Political Weekly. Amit Basole and Deepankar Basu, "Relations of Production and Mode of Surplus Extraction in India." It was published in two parts, the first in the April 2-8, 2011 issue, and the second in the April 9-25, 2011 issue. EPW makes recent issues available online at epw.org.in. These articles should still be available for a short time. If you have difficulty getting them (or the Vanaik articles), write me offlist and I can send you PDFs.

Subject: [lbo-talk] Good Marxist Accounts of India, post-Independence?
Hello,
I am looking for what the subject header says. Preferably not anything book-length, but more article length; I am looking for shorter, essayistic pieces from journals and the like that offer useful summaries.
Any recommended suggestions?
