For fairly simple tables, charts, word processing, diagrams and presentations, why not leave the bloated office suite behind and just use Google Docs?

Works wherever you have a browser. Looks the same on Windows, Linux, or Apple. "Free". Backed-up. Allows collaboration.

Of course, when Google breaks something, you are at their mercy. But it is the same with MS Office. And I've never encountered an annoyance in OpenOffice/LibreOffice where I went out and fixed it myself with a patch (it isn't like it is just a few thousand lines of a single C program). So no matter what I use, I am at the mercy of someone else.
