I agree that Google's insisting on filtering out my messages to lists is irritating, but there's a very easy work-around. I filter all messages " to:lbo-talk at lbo-talk.org", anyway. So, I still don't get my message back, but the message I sent goes into the virtual folder with all the other lbo-talk messages. When people reply, it threads to my message as usual. Piece of cake.

I imagine something similar should work just as easily for Chuck, although maybe he prefers to have them all in his inbox. In that case, you might be able to make your sent mail to the list go to your inbox using a filter (it's been a long time since I worked with Outlook Express, but it might give you this option).
