Doug is rather kind to "this piece of nonsense." The writer first notes that "the left" is divided, and _then_ argues that this collection of unrelated individuals and groups shouod, as though it possessed a single mind, get used to this or that. The writer hasn't even begun to think of what would be involved. He is clearly not interested in the least of attempting to build a left but only interested in a peg on which he can hang his maunderings.
Julio believes that by endless preaching one can change the minds of the congregation. Even if that were true, it would still be silly because there is no congregation in the pews to listen to his persuasions.
