Bryan, thanks a lot for your comments, they were very informative.
One reaction that I have is that the attitudes your describe - those
of the green party types and the one who had something else to do
instead of voting against the candidate he hated seem to be quite
widely spread among young people in the liberal camp that I met.  I
observed that on many occasions - they do not like Republican
politics, their views are liberal (albeit often with a neo-liberal
twist) - but they tend not to get involved in politics.

This reminds me of a cartoon in one of the issues of The Nation
showing conservative and liberal styles of organizing.  Conservatives
were portrayed as going out to get votes through their social networks
(churches, associations, etc.) while liberals were portrayed as
talking about organizing on social media.
