It's more typical for the components in electronics and machines assembled in China to come from other Asian countries like Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, rather than the United States.

So, I think Chuck Grime's larger point stands. The iPhone may be designed in California, but it's batteries and lenses are made in Taiwan, it's screen is manufactured in Japan, and it's chips are made in South Korea and Taiwan.

Japan is the biggest supplier to China of components for the auto industry, electronics, and machines, not the U.S.
