But in a way you misuse the word democracy. True, its initial meaning, 2500 years ago, was rule by the people, and that is certainly not the case in the U.S. To that extent you are correct. But "democracy," as in the statement, "The U.S. is a democracy," has some kind of meaning, though it is difficult to define precisely. It is one style of authoritarian rule, but a definition would have to distinguish it from more direct froms of authoritarianism.
