Yes! I used to occasionally climb with an adjunct prof in geography. One day I came to visit him in a temporary office and he had a portfolio of early geographic survey (USGS) maps of California. Along with each map were a series of engraved landscape drawings looking in the cardinal directions. The particular drawings were of a high plateau decorated with the low scrub plants. The effect of studying these drawings was to produce a cinamascope like picture of the area.
It would have been a very nice job.
