[WS:] Yeah. To me, he was like a canary in the coal mine - his
abandonment of the left allegiances tells volumes not just about the
state of his own intellectual health, but also that of his
intellectual milieu. When rats jump the ship this usually means she
is not very seaworthy. I did not know him personally - I met him only
once in Baltimore and he was fully loaded - but I always saw him as an
incarnation of Mencken - critical thinker, sometimes right, sometimes
wrong, typically insolent and never afraid of desecrating conventional
thinking and its holy grails.
