There has been a spate of charges against UCI student protests from last year on the part of the Orange County DA. A group of students who held a sit in in the UCI administration in solidarity with outsourced workers and in protest of the anti-black racism of the UC system (exemplified by the situation in UC San Diego at the time) was charged with a set of misdemeanors. In addition, the potential for much more serious charges face the primarily Muslim students who protested the Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren last year. A grand jury has subpoenaed 6 students in regards to possible felony charges.
Here are my slightly more extended thoughts on the situation, with some links to a petition and other avenues of contacting the Orange County DA's office. http://workresumedonthetower.blogspot.com/2011/02/on-convening-grand-jury-for-irvine-11.html
In addition, here is an article on a protest that occurred today in front of the Orange County DA's office. http://www.dailypilot.com/news/tn-dpt-0202-protest-20110201,0,555172.story
