The current Consumer Expenditure Survey has been been done on an ongoing basis since 1980. Before then, every decade or so. http://www.bls.gov/cex/

But they've also put together a report with long-term historical data - "100 Years of U.S. Consumer Spending: Data for the Nation, New York City, and Boston." It's available here: http://www.bls.gov/opub/uscs/home.htm .
