[lbo-talk] A good summary of the Lebanon situation

Within a given nation, and probably within some 'clusters' of nations (e.g. in the EU) politics can be viewed in left-right terms. But globally, at this time, the division is between the Major powers one 'side,' nations struggling for independence on the other side. That is why accounts of the _internal_ affairs of those 'other' natins-struggling-to-be-born are irrelevant to our judgments of those nations.

And yes -- this is a defense of Iran and a considered attack on the naïve u.s. leftists who ignored global relations and tired to impose a naïve and utopian moralistic standard on other nations, including Iran.

An alliance of Germany (a.k.a. EU), the U.S., and Japan, with Russia and China as "junior" partners has launched a global war attempting to reimpose 'Order' on the Middle East. (Latin America has some breathing room while the battle is focused on North Africa, Iran, and Pakistan.

It is easy enough, actually, to identify the 'sides.' All states which support the sanctions on Iran are part of the savage alliance now causing global horror. In many of those states, however, the people do want independence, which can be achieved only by overthrowing their own governments. Such an overthrow won't guarantee independence, and certainly not internal democracy," but it is the essential precondition for either.

By Marc J. Sirois, the editor of Daily Star, a prominent Lebanese newspaper. After a steady diet of western news, reading this is like passing through a looking glass into a world where where Hizbollah is right and the US is wrong. And it seems a lot closer to the truth:
