[lbo-talk] Glimmer of Things to Come? was RE: Bahrain

I'm allowing myself just a very tiny glimmer of hope. I sat in (by invitation) at a small student meeting in a local coffee house tonight. They are the first actual radical student group on campus since SDS collapsed 40 years ago. They were cheerful, relaxed, and businesslike. The main topic was how to relate to the events in Madison. (One of their members is already there, participating in the occupation of the Capitol.) I had chatted with their leading member (who calls himself a socialist anarchist, or anarchist socialist: I forget which) a couple weeks ago at the monthly meeting of BNCPJ. (Sorry shag: I had nothing to do with the beads; I spent my time in the back of the room jawing with Stefan.) Stefan said their main purpose was to prepare the students in it to go out and create similar groups in the places they got jobs after college! That's an improvement on SDS. There were some brief references to Egypt -- not as a focus but as encouragement for what they were up to. That's my slight glimmer of being optimistic: however little a given struggle achieves, if they start to multiply, things can happen. They build up mutual courage and trigger others to move towards political activity.

Enough said. If the orders did not came directly from Washington, they must have been given a green light there..
