I'm more hopeful than this, for two reasons.
First, the US Empire really doesn't control much of anything anymore -- nearly every large nation of the semi-periphery has freed themselves from Wall Street neoliberalism, the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan are a complete and total loss, democratic revolutions are sweeping aside US client states in the Middle East, and the BRICs just rocketed past the $10 trillion GDP mark.
Second: Tahrir Square has demolished the ideological underpinnings of the Terror War. Suddenly, Arabs are people -- ordinary human beings, who want peace, democracy, a better life for their kids. The whole rationale for the $1 trillion military-industrial complex has just gone out the window.
