In the UK, hardware stores are called DIY stores, or have are branded as such. It's confusing to people coming from the US, especially in the 30-45 range, who did time in the punk scene in the 1985-2000 period, when DIY was a synonym for underground, indie, punk, whatever. A hardware store? I thought it was an artform, etc. It's funny.

DIY is especially significant a term in an American context because it has specific generational/cultural connotations, which it can't be so easily separated from, without causing misunderstandings. This said, I can't see why it shouldn't be applied to things other than music, or to people producing things like clothes, who are under 30.
