I get it... I can dream of hardassery but, sadly, it is the administration
who's obsessed with evaluations and our pay, etc. that are in the balance.
There's resistance but, because all dept's (much less all faculty within
depts) don't resist, resisting the administration is often the route to
departmental punishment and clear evidence of relative institutional
powerlessness. Rather than a hardass I try to remind them at every turn of
their responsibilities and what they can expect as laid out by the syllabus.
