Maybe so at the height of the Cold War when Israel was the central pillar of US policy in the Middle East.
Nowadays anti-Zionist protests are the biggest dork-magnet going. With all the challenges to the dictatorships in the Middle East, the protestors against Israel are those who are most determined to avoid what is new in the situation, and insist that nothing really has changed.
At its worst, of course, it does indeed descend into a ghoulish fixation on the Jewish origins of the Israeli state.
Here’s Fight Racism, Fight Imperialism!’s Marxist (sic) analysis of the Jewish firm Marks & Spencer: ‘Many shopping centres and high streets were propped up by the continuing presence of Marks and Spencer. The shoppers never saw the diabolical plot their search for value for money became part of. Good intentions, carefully packaged far away like Israel itself, built another tragedy in the Middle East.’
‘Marks and Spencer registered St Michael in 1928 as the trademark for goods produced to its orders. The archangel Michael is the patron and guardian angel of the Jewish people. In the Book of Daniel, Michael is described as the special protector of Israel. Saint Michael is also the patron saint of battle, of security forces and paratroopers, of banking, of the sick and those possessed by the devil. Saint Michael is also the Archangel of Death.’ http://www.revolutionarycommunist.org/index.php/campaigns/palestine-campaign/1353-marks-and-spencer-ally-of-israel.html
