Cissie Jupe (Hard Times) had an interesting comment on this sort of 
question:

It depends on who's got the money.

I know people whose lives were permanently "thrown off course" bya the 
recession of f1974-5. I even knew a couple peole who had a hard time 
recovering their lives from the recession of 1955 -- 'objectively' a 
very light recession.
