Not sure what you mean about the left, but there's strong opposition - 60% or more - to cutting Medicare and Social Security. Most people would like to get the hell out of Afghanistan. But they'll vote for him in 2012 anyway. So it's not that their numbers are negligible - it's that they keep pulling that lever, or filling in that blank, or whatever.
