It may be that the center is already being populated by nutty right wingers. Surely many consider Obama a socialist and scary because of that, who are even in the middle of the spectrum in the U.S.. Obviously even those who consider it good that he is a socialist must have a nutty right wing view of socialism. With a whole spectrum of nutty right wingers in the U.S. how can they all be in the Republican party?

Of course, there's a bunch of the population scared by what they imagine are militant left wingers.
