It is indeed a great movie. I saw it in NYC a few years ago.

Highly recommended. Only American movie that reminded me of the work of Satyajit Ray.

I can personally recommend it, which I don't say about too many works of art. Charles Burnett is one of the most underappreciated of the US independent filmmakers -- his work always has deep layers of empathy for the characters and their stories, an almost literary quality, as it were. I won't spoil the plot, but suffice to say that "Killer of Sheep" is very much the radical critique of the blaxploitation genre.
