It's a dead end if you want a new party, certainly. But if you think there will always been two parties, and the job is to push the lefter one more to to the left, then theoretically a fusion party is a way of institutionalizing that approach, instead of coming up with ad hoc means each eletion cycle.
In practice of course it often replicates the basic problem that when the Dems suck and are powerful, the WFP has no place else to go.
