I remember rather liking Anxiety of Influence back in the day; I should re-visit it. But all that later stuff about the Kabbalah and the "canon" seems utterly silly to me; and "The Book of J" may well be the silliest book I've ever read.
This is not an uncommon pattern among academics -- one or two good books and then a long decline into ludicrousness. I'm told Cornel West once wrote a good book, though I haven't read it.
