My experience was markedly different, because my first and only
English teachers were ESL teachers at various community college
programs for FOBs.  An I have to say that I very much appreciated what
they were doing, especially with a rather difficult crowd.  Perhaps I
could not discuss philosophy with them, but I learned quite a bit
about American English composition, which is very much different from
what I learned in Europe, from these guys.  What I particularly
appreciated was a very non-pretentious, non-condescending, and
matter-of-fact way they treated their students - which I saw as a
contrast to Europe.
