I've been in the game since 1992 as a professor.  Since 1985 if you want to go back to grad student days.  So, I agree with you about academic marxists being no more obnoxious, on average, than regular academics.  And I feel you if you're in the midst of trying to get employment while not playing that particular game.  But I was wondering more about myself than about anyone else when I wrote that.  I come to work these days in jeans and a t-shirt, haven't cut my hair in nearly two years, curse like a sailor, I don't think I condescend to my students, and I gave up on the disciplinary status game a long time ago (primarily, I think, because I'm no good at it).  But maybe I still sound like that.  Hope not, but maybe...

What it is a talk at the university.  Familiar much with university
culture?  As if "preening, pretentious, self-satisfied, egoists" does not
cover off 80%; Marxist or not.  It is kind of designed that way.  How far
would you get if you came off as un-kept, un-sure, un-satisfied and no ego?
I am trying it, and brother I can tell you it is not working.
