Well - both electoral and non-electoral activity. Abolitionist agitation, on the one hand. But also the important experiences of the Liberty and Free Soil parties. (Both of which relied on fusion, by the way, as with today's Working Families Party.)

In order to abolish slavery , it was necessary to have acts by Congress and state legislatures or constitutional conventions. So, it was necessary to lobby _elected_ officials or, as happened ultimately, get candidates elected to office. I guess John Brown engaged in armed struggle in Kansas, but that is not an option today.
