[lbo-talk] Eric Margolis on Libya

Just for the record, that article seems mostly ok, but ends with some misleading quotes:

"The Gaddafi Government's treatment of migrants has been known to undercut human rights for a long time. In the past week, matters have escalated further. Human rights groups have reported atrocious racist violence against Sub-Saharan Africans in Libya, including those removed there by Italy on the basis of bilateral agreements with Libya designed to combat illegal immigration to Europe. Eritrean, Somali, and Sudanese refugees, accused of being mercenaries on the payroll of the government are summarily executed with knives and machetes."

The implication is this is due to Gaddafi, when in this case, the attacks on black refugees in 2000 (which killed 150) were put down by his security services. And the attacks today on 'African mercenaries' are by the rebels, none in Gaddafi-controlled areas. This is well documented. Libya has serious racial problems, however Gaddafi has historically backed the black-skinned Fezzan tribes while his opponents detest them, which is why the black-skinned Libyans (along with migrants) have been attacked by the 'rebels'.
