I get that these are important questions in certain contexts and at certain junctures, but this seems unnecessarily (and, I feel like I should say, fairly characteristically) testy. Possibly also a bit parochial, in that typically American way that some of Carrol's recent posts have also unfortunately displayed. (And I hasten to add that Carrol is without question the person on this list from whom I have learned the most, despite fairly regular annoyance with his positively hemorrhoidal jeremiads.)
